CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO — The Ilocos Norte police headed by Police Senior Superintendent Ulysses Abellera, and the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Agustin,” today identified the suspect who allegedly shot to death DZJC broadcaster Jovelito R. Agustin in Laoag City last June 15.
Police Superintendent Bienvenido C. Rayco Jr., Task Force Commander of SITG Agustin, named the alleged gunman as Leonardo V. Banaag Jr. of Barangay #7 in Bacarra town based on a positive identification by a witness.
The investigating body also secured a compilation of recorded commentaries and programs of Agustin from the management of DZJC and the same are being processed to be used as possible evidence.
Police Chief Superintendent Constante D. Azares Jr., Region 1 police director, said he ordered his men to dig up possible connection of the killing to the victim’s job as a broadcaster and linking it to the previous shooting attempt that happened at the residential compound of the Agustin family in Barangay #36 Natba, Bacarra last May 7, 2010 wherein Banaag was identified as one of the three suspects in the said incident.
“Although the suspect was identified, our policeman is still digging other possible motives, and they are also evaluating the gathered pieces of evidence to find out if there is substantial connection of Bacarra Vice Mayor-elect Pacifico Velasco in the killing, after Banaag was identified as his supporter,” the Regional Director stressed.
Meanwhile, SITG Agustin is now coordinating with the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the possible placing of the witness under the Witness Protection Program after said witness pinpointed Banaag as the gunman. PNPPRO1
